None of the products tested exceeded the relevant EU regulatory limits, and the estimated daily exposure remained below established tolerable daily intake levels when the products were consumed at their recommended doses.
However, this doesn’t mean that every product was free from toxic metals.
The study confirmed that these contaminants can be present in marine collagen and that levels vary between products.
The researchers also recommended that food safety regulations be updated to consider the possible cumulative risk created by consuming multiple contaminated supplements.
This distinction matters. Staying below a regulatory limit is not the same as containing no detectable contaminants.
Regulatory thresholds are intended to restrict exposure, but consumers may also encounter heavy metals through food, drinking water, environmental pollution and other supplements.
A test result also only reflects the particular product or batch examined.
